Siri Shortcuts for beginners
Siri Shortcuts let you run an action or a chain of actions with a phrase, a tap or a widget. Open the Shortcuts app, create or add a shortcut, name it, then say "Hey Siri" followed by that name. Apps can also supply shortcuts that appear without you building anything.

What are Siri Shortcuts?
Shortcuts is an Apple app that lets you build small automations from blocks. Wikipedia describes it as a visual scripting app that can be run from the app, from widgets or through Siri (Wikipedia: Shortcuts)). Apple bought the app Workflow in 2017 and turned it into Shortcuts, which arrived with iOS 12.
You do not need to code. You pick blocks, such as "send a message" or "get the weather", and link them in a line.
How do I run a shortcut with my voice?
- Open the Shortcuts app and make sure the shortcut has a clear, short name.
- Say "Hey Siri" and then the name of the shortcut, or press and hold the side button and say it.
- Siri runs the shortcut. If it needs input, it asks for it.
- If Siri does not find it, rename the shortcut with a simpler phrase.
What are app shortcuts?
Apps can offer ready-made shortcuts through a system called App Intents. They appear in the Shortcuts app and in Siri without you building anything. You might say "Hey Siri, tell Buddy to remind me to stretch" and the app handles it.
Musse Buddy ships three Siri phrases that work this way: "Tell Buddy to ..." for a new mission, "Ask Buddy what's in progress" for a status update and "Buddy, remind me ..." for a reminder. The name is your buddy's name. They are already in the Shortcuts app after you install it, and the Siri screen in the app has an Open Shortcuts button.
Which five shortcuts should I try first?
| Shortcut | What it does | Blocks used |
|---|---|---|
| Text my ETA | Sends your arrival time to one person | Get current location, send message |
| Morning summary | Reads the weather and your first event | Get weather, get calendar, speak |
| Focus on | Starts a Focus and a timer | Set Focus, start timer |
| Quick note | Dictates a note to Notes | Dictate text, create note |
| Call home | Dials a favorite contact | Call |
How do I build a simple shortcut?
- Open Shortcuts and tap the plus to make a new one.
- Tap Add Action, and search for the first block, for example Send Message.
- Fill in the person and, if needed, set the text to Ask Each Time.
- Tap the name at the top and call it something you can say easily.
- Tap Done, then test by tapping the shortcut, then by voice.
Can I run shortcuts from a widget or button?
Yes. Add the Shortcuts widget to the Home Screen or Lock Screen, or use a control in Control Center on iOS 18. The Action button on newer iPhones can also run a shortcut. This gives you the same action without speaking, which is useful in a library or a meeting.
What can shortcuts not do?
- Control apps that offer no actions to the system.
- Read your messages in other apps.
- Pay for something without your confirmation.
- Run in the background forever. iOS limits what can run when the phone is idle.
- Fix a poorly chosen name: if Siri mishears it, rename it.
Are shortcuts private?
Shortcuts run on your phone and use the permissions you grant. A shortcut can ask for access to contacts, location or files the first time it runs. Review those requests. Do not run shortcuts from strangers without reading the blocks, since a shortcut can send data to a web address.
What is an automation, and is it the same thing?
No. A shortcut waits for you to run it. An automation runs on its own when a trigger happens, such as arriving at work, a time of day or connecting to CarPlay. Open the Automation tab in Shortcuts, tap the plus and choose a trigger. Some automations ask for a tap to confirm, and others run silently.
How do I name a shortcut so Siri hears it?
- Use one or two common words.
- Avoid names that sound like system commands.
- Avoid names with numbers or symbols.
- Say it aloud a few times to check it does not sound like another phrase.
- Rename it if Siri keeps getting it wrong.
What does a first-week plan look like?
- Day 1: run one built-in shortcut from the gallery and read its blocks.
- Day 2: copy it, change one block and run the copy.
- Day 3: give it a short name and run it with Siri.
- Day 4: put it on the Home Screen or in Control Center.
- Day 5: build a shortcut for something you do every day.
- Day 6 and 7: delete what you did not use.
Where can I find ready-made shortcuts?
The Gallery tab in the Shortcuts app has a set of examples by Apple, sorted by topic. Start there because you can read each one before you run it. Shortcuts shared by other people through links can contain actions that send data, so open the details and look at the blocks before you add anything.
Can shortcuts talk to other apps?
Only to apps that expose actions. Many popular apps do, and each one appears as a block in the Shortcuts app. If an app has no actions, the shortcut can open it, and nothing more. This is why a hands-free routine across several apps is easier with apps that support the system well.
How is a shortcut different from an assistant app?
A shortcut is a fixed recipe: the same steps every time. An assistant app reads a free phrase and builds steps from it. Use a shortcut when the job never changes, such as "text my ETA". Use an assistant when each request differs, such as "remind me to call the clinic at 6 pm". They also work together: the Siri phrase starts the app, and the app builds the mission. See missions and CarPlay and Siri.
Why does Siri not run my shortcut?
The most common reasons are a name that is too long or too similar to another command, a shortcut that needs the phone open, or Siri turned off. Test with the app open to rule out the shortcut itself. If it works by tap and fails by voice, the problem is the name or Siri. The earlier guide Siri not working on CarPlay covers the voice side.
