Siri not working on CarPlay: nine fixes in order
When Siri stays silent in CarPlay, the cause is almost always a setting on the iPhone, a weak connection or a software glitch. Start with the cheapest checks: the steering-wheel voice button, Siri settings and the cable. Restarting both the iPhone and the car display fixes a large share of cases.

What is the quick answer?
Check, in this order: Siri is on in iPhone settings, Siri is allowed while the phone is locked, you press the right voice button, the cable and port are good, and iOS is up to date. If all five pass, remove the car from CarPlay settings and connect it again.
CarPlay itself is Apple's standard for using a car's display and controls as a screen and remote for the iPhone (Wikipedia: CarPlay). Siri is the main way to control it, which is why a silent Siri feels like a broken system.
Which fixes should I try first?
- Press and hold the voice-control button on the steering wheel, or the Home or voice button on the car screen, instead of saying "Hey Siri". Many cars do not pass the wake phrase to the phone.
- Open Settings on the iPhone and tap Siri (the name differs by iOS version). Make sure Siri is on and that pressing the side button or listening for the phrase is enabled.
- Allow Siri when the phone is locked. In a car, the phone sits in a pocket or a cradle and is locked most of the time.
- Check that CarPlay is allowed while locked: Settings, General, CarPlay, choose your car.
- Try another cable, ideally an Apple or certified one, and another USB port in the car. Cheap cables carry power but drop data.
- Turn off Bluetooth and turn it on again, or forget the car in Bluetooth settings if you use a wireless connection.
- Restart the iPhone. Then restart the car's infotainment system by switching the ignition off and on.
- Install the latest iOS update under Settings, General, Software Update.
- Remove the car under Settings, General, CarPlay and connect again as if it were new.
Does a wired or wireless connection matter?
Yes. Most cars connect over a cable, and some support wireless CarPlay. Wireless setups depend on Bluetooth for the first handshake and Wi-Fi after that, so there are more places for a break. If voice fails only on wireless, connect a cable once to see whether Siri returns. If it does, the wireless link is the fault.
Why does Siri hear me but do nothing?
Siri may be listening, then fail to complete the task. Common reasons are weak mobile data (Siri sends many requests to Apple's servers), a restriction under Screen Time, or a missing permission in the app you ask about. Test with an offline job such as "set a timer for five minutes". If a timer works and a web request does not, the problem is the connection, not CarPlay.
Why does Siri not hear me at all?
Check whether the microphone is covered or blocked by a phone case, a cradle that sits over the bottom edge, or a Bluetooth headset that is still connected and stealing the audio. Disconnect other Bluetooth devices, then try again. Loud fans or an open window also lower recognition, so test with the car stopped and the fan low.
What does a table of symptoms say?
| Symptom | Likely cause | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Voice button does nothing | Siri off or restricted | Check Siri settings and Screen Time |
| Siri answers on the phone, not in the car | Voice routing or cable | Swap cable, restart both |
| "Hey Siri" never works in the car | Car does not pass the phrase | Use the steering-wheel button |
| Works for calls, fails for apps | App permission or server | Test a timer, check the app |
| Drops after a few minutes | Loose port or Wi-Fi link | Change cable or port, update iOS |
Does a third-party app change anything?
It can. An app that works through Siri shares the same voice path, so if system Siri fails, the app phrase fails too. Musse Buddy, for example, ships Siri phrases such as "Tell Buddy to ..." and "Ask Buddy what's in progress". They run when Siri works and stop when it does not. For that case it also adds a small Dashboard widget on iOS 26, with three buttons that create a mission by tap. Read CarPlay and Siri for the set-up and the CarPlay widgets guide for the widget checklist.
What if nothing works?
Test the phone with another car or a rental if you can. If Siri works there, your car's head unit may need a software update from the dealer. If it fails in both, reset network settings under Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, Reset, Reset Network Settings. That removes saved Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth pairings, so it comes last.
If you still have no luck, contact Apple Support or your car dealer. Do not text or poke at a screen while driving. Park first, and obey the law in your area.
What if Siri worked yesterday and fails today?
A change in the last day is the clue. Did iOS update overnight? Did you swap a cable, a case or a phone mount? Did you install a new app that uses the microphone? Undo the newest change first. A fresh iOS version sometimes resets a Siri or CarPlay setting, so open both lists again and confirm each switch.
Also look at the car. A head unit that updated its software may need to be paired again, and a dealer service bulletin can explain a known fault on your model.
Which settings do people forget?
- Allow Siri When Locked, which matters because the phone is locked in a pocket.
- The CarPlay entry for your car, which can be disabled while the phone is locked.
- Screen Time limits that block Siri or the apps it controls.
- Microphone permission for the app you ask about.
- Language: Siri is set to a different language than you speak in the car.
Can I test it without driving?
Yes, and it is safer. Park, set the handbrake, and run the checks with the engine on. Say three short requests: "set a timer for one minute", "call" a contact you know and "what time is it". If all three work, the voice path is fine and the earlier failure was about the request, a weak signal or an app.
Never experiment with settings while the car is moving. A fix that takes ten minutes belongs in a parking space.
How do I prevent it next time?
- Use a short, good cable and keep a spare in the glovebox.
- Keep iOS updated, and update the car software when the maker offers it.
- Do not leave dozens of old Bluetooth pairings on the phone.
- Say short, single requests. Long sentences with two jobs confuse Siri and every app behind it.
- Learn the manual route: park and use the phone, so a failed voice command never leaves you stuck.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Siri not working on CarPlay?
The usual causes are Siri settings, a bad cable, a connection glitch or an outdated iOS. Work through them in order, starting with the steering-wheel voice button.
Does Hey Siri work in CarPlay?
In some cars, yes. In others the car does not pass the wake phrase to the phone, and you must press the voice-control button.
Should I restart my iPhone or the car first?
Restart the iPhone first, then the car's display. Together they clear most temporary glitches.
Can a cable cause Siri to fail?
Yes. A cable that charges but carries poor data causes dropouts. Try an Apple or certified cable.
Will Musse Buddy work if Siri fails?
Its Siri phrases will not. On iOS 26 with a supported car, the Dashboard widget gives three buttons that create missions without Siri.
