CarPlay widgets on iOS 26: how to add them and what to check if they don't show
On iOS 26 a small widget from your iPhone can appear on the CarPlay Dashboard. To add one, connect the phone, long-press the Dashboard, choose Edit widgets and pick the widget. If it does not show, check the iOS version, whether your car's CarPlay displays widgets and whether the app offers one.

What is a CarPlay widget?
CarPlay is Apple's standard that lets a car's display and controls work as a screen and remote for an iPhone. Wikipedia says it is available on iPhone 5 and later models with iOS 7.1 or later, and that Apple reports more than 800 car and motorcycle models support it (Wikipedia: CarPlay). A widget is a small tile on the Dashboard screen that shows a bit of information or a button from an app on your phone.
Wikipedia notes that iOS 26 brings the Liquid Glass design language to CarPlay. Widgets on the Dashboard are part of the same generation of changes. The rest of this guide covers what you need to make one appear.

How long has CarPlay been around?
Apple announced it as iOS in the Car at WWDC in June 2013. It was renamed CarPlay and launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2014, with Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo among the first automakers. A Ferrari FF was the first car with the full version in September 2014 (Wikipedia: CarPlay, timeline). Most systems connect over USB, some are wireless, and wireless can be added through aftermarket adapters.
How do I add a widget to the CarPlay Dashboard?
These steps match the in-app instructions of Musse Buddy. Menu names in your car may differ a little depending on its software.
- Update the iPhone to iOS 26 and connect it to the car, by cable or wirelessly.
- Open the CarPlay Dashboard on the car's screen.
- Long-press the dashboard and choose Edit widgets.
- Add the widget from the app you want. For Musse Buddy, add "Musse Buddy" and take the small square.
- Leave edit mode and check that the widget appears.
Why is my CarPlay widget not showing?
Work through the list from the cheapest check to the most involved. Most cases are one of the first three.
| Check | What to look at |
|---|---|
| iOS version | Settings, General, About should show iOS 26 or later |
| Car support | Your car's CarPlay must display widgets. Not every car does, and the manufacturer's software matters |
| Widget added | Dashboard, long-press, Edit widgets. A widget installed on the phone is not added to the car automatically |
| App offers one | The app must include a CarPlay-capable widget. Check the app's own instructions |
| Connection | Reconnect the cable, or forget and re-pair the wireless connection |
| Restart | Restart the iPhone, then reconnect |
A widget cannot show on a car whose software does not display widgets, whatever the app does.
What should a driver actually do with a widget?
Very little, and by design. A dashboard widget works best as a one-tap shortcut or as a glanceable status. Anything that needs reading or typing belongs to voice, or to later, when you are parked. Local laws on phone use while driving apply, and they differ from place to place.
How does Musse Buddy use the Dashboard?
Musse Buddy provides the small widget that iOS 26 can show on the Dashboard. It shows your buddy and the last mission or the next reminder, and three quick-action buttons you choose in the app, from Reminder, Note, Call, Message, Errand and Plan. A tap creates a mission tagged from CarPlay. For talking, you press the wheel's voice button and use Siri, for instance "Hey Siri, tell Buddy to text Anna I'm ten minutes late."
Buddy does not send that message by itself. It prepares a draft and waits for your OK. The pieces are detailed on the CarPlay and Siri page, and the widgets page covers the Lock Screen and Home Screen versions. Musse Buddy is in TestFlight and not yet on the App Store.
Do Siri phrases work if the widget doesn't?
Yes. Siri phrases do not depend on the Dashboard widget. They work wherever Siri does, such as AirPods, the phone and Apple Watch, according to the app. So if your car does not show widgets, you can still use the "Tell Buddy to …" phrases by voice. See also AI assistant apps for iPhone for the limits of what an app may do on iOS.
Does wired or wireless CarPlay change anything for widgets?
Wikipedia says most CarPlay systems connect through USB and some are wireless, and that wireless support can be added with aftermarket adapters. Both are the same CarPlay to the iPhone, but a flaky wireless link is a common reason for a Dashboard that loads slowly or drops. If a widget will not appear on a wireless connection, try a cable once to rule the link out.
An aftermarket adapter or head unit adds another layer of software between the phone and the screen. If your car is older and uses one, the adapter's own update notes are worth a look before you blame the app.
A quick checklist to keep
- iOS 26 or later on the iPhone
- A car whose CarPlay shows widgets
- The widget added through Edit widgets
- An app that actually ships a widget
- Reconnect or restart if nothing changes
