How to set a reminder with Siri on iPhone

By · Updated · 4 min read

Say "Hey Siri, remind me to call Anna at 6 pm" and Siri creates the reminder in the Reminders app. You can attach a time, a place or a repeat to the same sentence. If Siri does not respond, the cause is usually a setting, a microphone or a phrase it cannot parse.

What do I say to set a reminder?

Start with the wake phrase, or press and hold the side button, then give the task and when. The plain pattern is "remind me to [task] [when]". Siri adds it to the Reminders app and reads it back.

Keep the task short and put the time at the end. "Remind me to pick up the dry cleaning at 6 pm" works better than a long sentence with the time buried in the middle.

Which phrases work for time?

You sayResult
Remind me to stretch in 20 minutesDue 20 minutes from now
Remind me to call Anna at 6 pmDue today at 18:00
Remind me to pay rent tomorrow morningDue tomorrow, at the morning time Siri picks
Remind me to water the plants every SundayRepeats weekly on Sunday
Remind me to take the pills every day at 9 amRepeats daily at 09:00

Can Siri remind me when I arrive or leave a place?

Yes. Reminders can trigger by location, and Siri can set it by voice: "Remind me to buy milk when I leave work" or "remind me to turn off the oven when I get home". The place must be one Siri can find, such as Home or Work saved in your contact card, or a named address.

Location reminders need location access for Reminders. If one never fires, open Settings, Privacy and Security, Location Services, and check Reminders.

How do I set up Siri if it does not answer?

  1. Open Settings and tap Siri (it may be called Siri & Search or Apple Intelligence & Siri, depending on your iPhone and iOS version).
  2. Turn on the option to listen for "Siri" or "Hey Siri", and finish the voice setup if it asks.
  3. Turn on the side button option so you can press and hold instead of speaking the wake phrase.
  4. Allow Siri when the phone is locked, if you want to use it from the Lock Screen.
  5. Try a short test: "Remind me to test in 1 minute".

Why did Siri create the wrong reminder?

Three mistakes repeat. First, a bare hour such as "at 7" can land on the morning, so say "7 pm". Second, a long sentence with two jobs gives you one reminder that mixes them. Say each job as its own request. Third, background noise changes names, so check the text Siri shows before it saves.

You can always tap the reminder in the Reminders app and edit the text, time or list.

What if I would rather type?

Siri also takes typed requests on recent iOS versions, which helps in a quiet room or on a train. The wording is the same as for voice. Typing also lets you see the exact words before you send them, which prevents misheard names.

Is there an alternative to Siri and Reminders?

Yes. Several assistant apps schedule a local notification from a spoken phrase. Musse Buddy reads times in four forms: "in 20 minutes", "in 2 hours", "at 18:30" or "at 7 pm", and "tomorrow". Tomorrow without an hour means 09:00, a time that has passed today moves to the next day, and a reminder with no time is set one hour ahead. The result is an ordinary iOS notification.

The difference is the list. Each spoken request becomes a mission with a status, so you can see what is pending. You can also say it to Siri: the app ships the phrases "Tell Buddy to ..." and "Buddy, remind me ...". More in CarPlay and Siri and missions.

Why do I not see my reminder on the Lock Screen?

Reminders can be created and still not show because notifications are off, a Focus is active or the time was set for the wrong day. Check Settings, Notifications, Reminders, and look at any Focus that is on. A separate guide covers the full list: iPhone reminders not working.

How do I edit or delete a reminder by voice?

Siri handles the basics. Say "show my reminders" to see the list, or "delete my last reminder" on versions that support it. Editing a time by voice is hit and miss, so the dependable way is to open the Reminders app, tap the reminder and change the date field.

If you often change plans, a shorter window helps. "In 30 minutes" is easier to fix than a date next week, because a wrong guess matters for less time.

Which reminders suit voice and which do not?

Reminder typeVoice works wellBetter typed
Call someone in an hourYesNo
Buy something when leaving a placeYesOnly to pick an exact place
A shopping list with 12 itemsNoYes
A recurring bill on the 1stYes, if you say the dayTo set an end date
A note with a link or addressNoYes

How do I make reminders work in the car?

Voice is the only safe input behind the wheel. Press the steering-wheel voice button and speak the same sentence. CarPlay passes it to Siri, and the reminder lands in the same app. If your car supports iOS 26 widgets, an app can also add a one-tap tile for a ready phrase, which is how Musse Buddy handles a reminder from the road. See the CarPlay widgets guide for what a tile can and cannot do.

Can Siri add a reminder to a specific list?

Yes, if the list exists. Say "remind me to renew the passport in my Admin list" and Siri files it there. If it cannot find the list name, it saves the reminder in your default list, so a quick look at the confirmation is worth the second. Short, distinct list names such as Home, Work and Errands are recognized more reliably than long ones.

A tip for families: shared lists let another person see the reminder too. Say the list name the same way every time, and the habit turns into a routine.

A quick checklist for reliable reminders

  • One task per sentence.
  • Time as a number with am or pm.
  • Name the person the way your contacts do.
  • Glance at the confirmation Siri shows.
  • Use repeat words (every day, every Sunday) only when you mean them.
