iPhone reminders not working: ten fixes in order
When an iPhone reminder does not alert you, the cause is usually notification settings, an active Focus or a wrong date and time. Check Settings, Notifications, Reminders first, then your Focus and the due time. Sync problems come last. Most fixes take under a minute.

What should I check first?
- Open Settings, Notifications, Reminders and make sure Allow Notifications is on.
- Choose Lock Screen, Notification Center and Banners, and set a banner style that stays until dismissed if you miss them.
- Turn on sounds, and check that Silent mode is off for audible alerts.
- Look at the reminder itself: the date, the time and the list.
- Check whether a Focus is on in Control Center.
Why does a reminder not alert me?
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No banner, no sound | Notifications off | Allow in Settings, Notifications |
| Banner but no sound | Silent mode or Focus | Turn Silent off, check Focus |
| Alert at the wrong hour | Time zone or time set wrongly | Check date, time and zone |
| Reminder not on Lock Screen | Lock Screen option off | Enable Lock Screen in notification settings |
| Missing on another device | Sync off | Check iCloud for Reminders |
| Location reminder never fires | Location access off | Allow location for Reminders |
How does Focus block reminders?
Focus modes silence notifications from apps that are not on the allowed list. If you set Sleep, Work or Do Not Disturb and did not allow Reminders, the alert is held back. Open Settings, Focus, pick the mode, then Apps and add Reminders to the allowed list. Time Sensitive notifications can break through if you allow them.
What about Scheduled Summary?
Scheduled Summary groups notifications and delivers them at set times. If Reminders is in the summary, you get its alerts together at, for example, 8 am and 6 pm. Check Settings, Notifications, Scheduled Summary and take Reminders out if you want alerts the moment they are due.
How do I check the date and time?
A reminder set for "7" can mean morning or evening. Open the reminder and check the AM or PM, and the day. Also open Settings, General, Date & Time and make sure Set Automatically is on, so travel across time zones does not shift alerts by hours.
Why do reminders not sync between iPhone and iPad?
- Check that both devices use the same Apple ID.
- Open Settings, tap your name, iCloud, and make sure Reminders is on.
- Check the connection, then close and reopen the app.
- Make sure both devices have the latest iOS.
- Restart both if a reminder still does not appear.
What if the Reminders app crashes or is empty?
Update iOS, restart the phone and open the app again. If a list went missing after an update, look under the iCloud account list and the On My iPhone list, since reminders can sit in one of two places. Do not delete the app until you are sure the data is in iCloud.
Can another app help?
Yes. A reminder from a different app uses its own notification permission, so it can work even when one setting blocks another. Musse Buddy turns a request like "remind me to take a break in 30 minutes" into a local iOS notification. It reads four time forms: "in 20 minutes", "in 2 hours", "at 18:30" or "at 7 pm", and "tomorrow". A time that has passed today moves to the next day, and a reminder with no time is set one hour ahead.
The app asks for notification permission at your first reminder. If you said no, change it in Settings, then Musse Buddy. Missions and their status stay in the app, so you can see what is due. See missions.
Does a reminder need the internet?
Not for the alert. A reminder with a date and time is stored on the phone and fires locally. Sync and location reminders use a connection. If an alert is late, the phone may have been asleep with a low battery, so charge it and check Low Power Mode.
What if only one list fails?
A list can have its own settings. Open the list, tap the three dots, and look at its options. A shared list can be muted by the other person or may use a different account. If a list is on a different account, such as an email account instead of iCloud, check that the account is signed in and that Reminders is allowed for it.
Why do alarms and reminders behave differently?
| Reminder | Alarm | |
|---|---|---|
| App | Reminders | Clock |
| Ignores Silent mode | No | Yes |
| Breaks through Focus | Only if allowed | Yes by default |
| Repeats | If set | If set |
| Best for | Tasks | Waking up, urgent timing |
How do I make an important reminder impossible to miss?
- Set a clear time with am or pm.
- Set the banner style to Persistent in the notification settings.
- Add Reminders to the allowed apps for your Focus.
- Add an early alert, such as 15 minutes before, for the due time.
- For critical items, add a second one in a different app.
Does Low Power Mode delay reminders?
Low Power Mode reduces background activity such as mail fetch and some syncing. A local, time-based alert should still fire, but shared lists and location reminders may arrive later. If you see delays only when the battery is low, charge the phone and test again with the mode off.
What should I do after an iOS update?
Updates sometimes reset notification or Focus settings. After a major update, open Settings, Notifications, Reminders and confirm the switches, then open each Focus and check the allowed apps. It takes two minutes and prevents a missed appointment.
How do I prevent missed reminders?
- Use banners that stay on screen until dismissed for important items.
- Add Reminders to the allowed apps of every Focus you use.
- Set times with am or pm, and read back what Siri saved.
- Keep one list for important alerts and leave notifications on for it.
- Pair a reminder with a calendar entry for anything critical.
When should I contact support?
If none of the fixes works and other apps also fail to alert, restart the phone, update iOS and, if needed, contact Apple Support. For problems with a third-party app, use its support page. For Musse Buddy, use the App Support link on its App Store page or see support.
