Voice Control vs Siri on iPhone

By · Updated · 4 min read

Siri answers questions and performs tasks when you ask. Voice Control is an accessibility feature that lets you operate the whole iPhone by voice: tap, scroll, type and open apps by saying what you see on screen. They are separate, and turning one off does not turn off the other.

What is Voice Control?

Voice Control is a feature in Accessibility settings. Apple introduced it with iOS 13 and macOS Catalina for people who cannot use their hands, and it works for anyone who wants to control the phone by voice. You say the names of buttons or use numbers shown over the screen, and the phone acts. It also dictates and edits text.

What is Siri?

Siri is Apple's assistant. It started as a standalone app in 2010, and Apple built it into the iPhone 4s in October 2011, according to Wikipedia (Wikipedia: Siri). You ask it for things in natural language, and it answers or opens the right feature. For its role among virtual assistants, see AI assistant apps for iPhone.

Why do people confuse them?

Both take your voice, and both show a similar microphone indicator in the status bar. When Voice Control turns on by accident, the phone starts reacting to ordinary words, taps things and opens apps. People then search "voice control iPhone keeps turning on" and "how to turn off voice control". The cause is almost always a shortcut that enabled it.

How do I turn Voice Control off?

  1. Open Settings and tap Accessibility.
  2. Tap Voice Control.
  3. Switch Voice Control off.
  4. Check Accessibility Shortcut, at the bottom of the Accessibility list, and clear Voice Control if it is ticked.
  5. Check Siri settings if you also want to stop Siri: they are separate.

Why does Voice Control turn on by itself?

A common cause is the Accessibility Shortcut: triple-clicking the side button can toggle features, including Voice Control. A child, a pocket or a case can trigger it. Another cause is a command you said that matched "Hey Siri", or a Back Tap gesture set to Voice Control. Check Accessibility Shortcut and Touch, Back Tap and remove what you do not need.

  2. Switch off Listen for "Siri" or "Hey Siri", and the side button option.
  3. To remove Siri suggestions, open the Siri settings of individual apps.
  4. Restart if the change does not take effect at once.

Which one is better for the car?

Can Voice Control help people with limited hand use?

That is its main purpose. Combined with the Accessibility Shortcut, a person can start it with a triple press of the side button and then run the whole phone by voice. Teachers, therapists and accessibility advisers can help set it up. Apple's Accessibility pages describe the feature in detail.

What does the status bar tell me?

When Voice Control is on, a blue microphone appears in the status bar. When Siri listens, you see an orb. If your phone reacts to stray words, look for the blue microphone first. That tells you which feature is awake and where to turn it off.

Can I use both?

Yes. They coexist. A person with limited hand use can say "Hey Siri, remind me at six" for a task and "Tap Done" to operate a form. If both are on, speak clearly and keep commands short so the phone knows which listener should act.

How do I try Voice Control safely?

  1. Open Settings, Accessibility, Voice Control and switch it on.
  2. Say "Show numbers" and see the overlay appear.
  3. Say "Tap" and a number to press an item.
  4. Say "Go home" to leave an app.
  5. Switch it off from the same screen when you finish, so it does not react to speech later.

Which tool should I learn first?

For most people, Siri. It is on by default, needs no setup beyond a voice sample and covers everyday jobs such as timers, calls and reminders. Learn Voice Control if you cannot use the touchscreen comfortably, or if you want to dictate and edit long text hands-free. Learning both takes an afternoon, and the knowledge pays back on any day your hands are busy or sore.

Does either one work with AirPods or CarPlay?

Siri does, on AirPods and on CarPlay. Voice Control is meant for the phone's own screen, so it is not the right tool in a car. If you wear AirPods, the "Hey Siri" phrase or a press on the stem can start Siri, depending on the model.

Where does an assistant app fit?

A third-party assistant uses neither. It runs inside its own screen. You hold a button, say a request and the app builds the steps. Musse Buddy works this way, with a talk button on the Buddy tab. Speech recognition is done by Apple's iOS speech service, and the app does not record or store audio. It listens only while you hold the button, and you can type instead. See the privacy policy.

Which should you choose?

  • Siri for quick everyday requests.
  • Voice Control if you need full hands-free operation of the screen.
  • An assistant app for multi-step tasks that need a review step.
  • Turn off any feature that triggers by mistake.
