iPhone widget sizes explained

Updated · 4 min read

iPhone Home Screen widgets come in small, medium and large, with an extra large size on iPad. The Lock Screen has circular, rectangular and inline widgets. A small widget fills four app icons, a medium one eight, a large one sixteen. Pick the size by how much you need at a glance.

Where do these names come from?

Apple defines the widget families that developers build for in WidgetKit, the framework that draws widgets (Apple: WidgetKit). The Home Screen families are small, medium, large and extra large. The Lock Screen families are accessory circular, accessory rectangular and accessory inline. Every widget app chooses which families to support, which is why a widget may offer one size and not another.

How do I add a widget of a given size?

  1. Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen until the icons wiggle.
  2. Tap the plus in the top corner.
  3. Search or scroll to the app.
  4. Swipe through the sizes and tap Add Widget on the one you want.
  5. Drag the widget to its place and tap Done.

How do I change a widget size afterwards?

Touch and hold the widget, tap Edit Widget, and look for a size option if the app offers more than one. Otherwise remove the widget and add a new one in another size. Some widgets show only one family, so there is nothing to change.

How do I choose a size?

  • Small when you need one fact: a count, a mood, a temperature.
  • Medium when you need two or three facts or a couple of buttons.
  • Large when the widget replaces opening the app, such as a calendar or a list.
  • Circular on the Lock Screen for a glance, with no text.
  • Rectangular when a few words add meaning.
  • Inline for a short phrase above the clock.

What does one app do across sizes?

Musse Buddy has a good example. Its small widget shows your buddy, the mood and three quick-action buttons you picked for the car, plus care chips for Pet, Feed and Sleep or Wake. The medium widget shows two quick actions, and the large one shows Reminder, Message, Note and Call. On the Lock Screen, the circular widget shows the face and mood, the rectangular one adds the last mission, and the inline one shows the buddy's name with a count.

The same small widget appears in StandBy, and on the CarPlay Dashboard on iOS 26. See widgets and Live Activity.

What about StandBy?

StandBy shows two widget stacks side by side. Widgets are scaled up from the small size to fill half the screen, so a widget that reads well small also reads well from across the room. The details of the mode are in StandBy mode setup.

Can I stack widgets?

Yes. Drag a widget on top of another of the same size to create a stack, then swipe up and down in the stack to switch. Smart Stack rotates widgets by the time of day. Stacks save space, but they hide one widget at a time, so keep the one you need most on top.

Do widgets update in real time?

Not exactly. iOS decides when a widget redraws, to protect the battery. The app asks for a refresh, and the system grants it within limits. That is why a count on a widget may be a few minutes behind. Live Activities are the exception, because they update in place for a running task. See turn off Live Activities if you do not want them.

Why is a widget blank or small?

The widget may be waiting for data, or the app may not support the size you chose. Remove the widget and add it again, open the app once, and wait for the refresh. A widget that needs an account or a set-up step inside the app stays blank until you complete it.

Which size suits which app type?

How many widgets are too many?

A Home Screen that is all widgets stops being a launcher. A balanced page has one large or two medium widgets and a few app icons. Count how many times you glance at each in a day. A widget you do not read in a week should go.

Do widgets drain the battery?

Slightly. Each refresh costs a little energy, which is why the system limits them. A handful of widgets makes no visible difference on a modern phone. If your battery drops fast, check Settings, Battery for the apps at the top before you blame widgets.

What is the right layout for a Home Screen page?

A common layout is one medium widget on top, a row of four app icons, a second row of icons and a small widget beside two icons. The medium widget carries the main information, such as the calendar, and the small widget carries a quick action. Keep the thumb zone at the bottom for the icons you tap most.

Are extra large widgets on iPhone?

No. The extra large family is for iPad, and Mac widgets use their own sizes. On an iPhone the largest Home Screen widget is the large one. If you use an app on both an iPhone and an iPad, expect the widget gallery to look different on each.

Do widgets use the internet?

Some do. Weather and news widgets fetch from a server. Others read data the app saved on the phone, which is how Musse Buddy works: the app writes a snapshot to storage shared with the widget, and the widget makes no network call.
